Taking it to the Man - The Torch (new window)
Coordinator for LCC OSPIRG's health care campaign, Neil McLeod, takes questions in Salem. On Tuesday, Feb. 19, students rallied at the state capitol to testify about health coverage in Oregon. The campaign is in response to potential changes to the Oregon Health Plan.

Acting bruised and broken, they gathered in front of Kaiser Permanente Town Hall with signs and banners attracting attention from local media and citizens.

Cascade POWER SHIFT 2008, the Northwest’s largest youth climate summit, ended on February 11th, wrapping up two weeks of intense climate action across the Northwest that also included nearly 50 Focus the Nation events across the region on January 31st, a giant rally in Oregon’s Capitol to oppose new liquefied natural gas importation on February 6th, and Oregon and Washington’s first-ever youth global warming lobby days in both Salem and Olympia on February 11th.

'Focus the Nation' will address global warming crisis - Oregon Daily Emerald (new window)
Today the campus of the University of Oregon will serve as a reflection of the changing political discussion, occurring across the nation. Jan. 31 marks the culmination of a year-long national campaign to reveal the importance of Global Climate Change in the modern world. "Focus the Nation," as the proponents of this campaign refer to it, is an attempt by University organizations, clubs and leaders to emphasize the importance of individual action in reducing the harmful wastes of American society.

As the debate over global warming heats up, Southern Oregon University is joining a nationwide effort to encourage Congress to take action. Next week, SOU's Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group will be fronting a two-day event presented through the organizational group, Focus the Nation.

Thanks to the Daily Emerald for its in-depth look at OSPIRG ("The OSPIRG you can't see," ODE, Jan. 22). The article did a good job painting a broad brush stroke, including many of our accomplishments and the important blend of student activism with professional staff. Sometimes, however, the best way to understand an organization is to go in-depth on just one accomplishment. Fortunately, a recent victory helps illustrates OSPIRG's service to the student body.

Student group budget appeals start today - Oregon Daily Emerald (new window)
Student groups unhappy with their 2007-08 budget allocations will have one more chance this week to plead their cases to the Programs Finance Committee. Budget appeals are scheduled for Thursday and Friday night. GLOSS (a student group in the department of Linguistics), the International Law Student Association and OSPIRG are on the schedule for Thursday night and the Student Bar Association and ASUO Constitution Court are on Friday's schedule.

Registering Young Voters For The Good Of The Democracy - Oregon Public Broadcasting (new window)
After weeks of flagging down students in dorms and on sidewalks, a coalition of Oregon non-profits said Monday it's registered 18,000 college students to vote. That was the goal, and it's one day before the voter registration deadline. A bigger goal of 28,000 young people is in sight, as well.

In the final weeks before the Nov. 7 election, a horde of volunteers and interest groups will do everything possible to reverse pollsters' predictions that Oregon most likely will have a low voter turnout this fall. The secretary of state has teamed with a Portland radio station to send text-message reminders to the under-30 crowd.
