Local Campaigns and Meeting Time
(Campaign Coordinator Katie Taylor)
We're working to shift our reliance from dirty coal energy to clean energy by shutting down Oregon's last coal plant. Check out the video of our flashmob in the LCC Cafeteria:
Clean energy can repower Oregon and America.
The continued use of dirty coal and oil threaten our environment, our health, and our economy. As energy costs continue to rise and climate change poses a danger, we need to move Oregon and the country in a new direction.
That's why we are working to shut down Oregon's last remaining coal plant - the Boardman power plant - as soon as possible. We look forward to working with Portland General Electric (PGE), the utility contracting with Boardman, to make Oregon a coal free state.
We do not need to produce any coal energy to meet our state's needs. Oregon has so much potential for clean energy by capitalizing on our renewable resources and incredible new technology like wind, solar, and tidal power among others. Shutting down the Boardman power plant as soon as possible will help Oregon transition into a clean energy economy, creating jobs and protecting our environment. In the long run, we can also save PGE's shareholders and the ratepayers for PGE money.
Textbooks are expensive and there’s nothing we can do about it...Wrong!
OSPIRG is advocating for the use of free open textbooks in addition to the traditional textbooks that we pay nearly $1000 a year buying. No new editions, no bundled CD ROMs, no cost! Help us reach out to professors and get the word out!
Students Against Hunger & Homelessness:
Hunger and homelessness are big problems facing our society. Every day, millions of Americans go without the means to meet basic needs of food and shelter. We are witnessing this disturbing reality unfold across the world as well. Devastating earthquakes in Haiti and Chile have reminded us that these problems are just one natural disaster away from
21st Century Public Transportation:
Our nation's transportation system is in need of repairs. Traffic congestion is ever increasing, the price of gas is skyrocketing, our reliance on dirty and dangerous fuels pollutes our air and water. It is becoming harder and more costly to get from point A to point B.
But there is a solution. More clean, efficient, and practical public transit projects will help solve our transportation problems. This means investing in a public transportation system that meets the demands of the 21st Century and a growing Oregon population.
In order to move Oregon in the right direction, OSPIRG is working for more reliable and better funded local transit efforts. We are also building support to bring High-Speed Rail to the northwest to link Eugene, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver B.C. together. This investment will stimulate our economy and ease our transportation ills.
We have seen an outpouring of support from LCC students to pave the way for a 21st Century public transportation system.
