Momentum building for stopping wasteful agricultural subsidies
As the year comes to a close, we have hit several important milestones in our campaign - run jointly with PIRGs in over 20 states - to end wasteful agricultural subsidies that line the pockets of the largest agribusinesses and go to corn syrup and other junk food ingredients. Since we launched this campaign last Spring, we educated half a million people across the country — including tens of thousands in Oregon — about these subsidies. Over 150 Oregon small farmers have joined our effort. We demonstrated that the issue has cross-ideological support when we co-authored an opinion piece in the Oregonian with the Cascade Policy Insitute. And our report, Apples to Twinkies, was featured on the CBS Morning News, along with Oregon small farmer Vernie DeMills. We have a lot of work still to do, so stay tuned!
